Dr. Steven Rothman

Dr. Rothman is board-certified in Neurology with Special Competence in Child Neurology, and in Pediatrics. He majored in chemistry at the University of Chicago and received his medical degree from the State University of New York at Syracuse. After two years of pediatric residency at the University of Minnesota, he came to St Louis for residencies in adult and child neurology at Washington University. He was on the full time faculty in neurology and pediatrics at Washington University and St Louis Children’s Hospital from 1978 through 2007. He was Director of Pediatric Neurology at St Louis Children’s Hospital between 1992 and 2004 and Stein Professor of Developmental Neurology and Professor of Neurology, Pediatrics, and Anatomy & Neurobiology from 1992 -2007. In 2007 he moved to Minneapolis to direct the Division of Clinical Pediatric Neuroscience at the University of Minnesota. He returned to St Louis to join Mercy Clinic in 2011.

Dr. Rothman has long standing clinical and research interests in neurology. He has cared for patients with wide - ranging problems including epilepsy, headache, movement disorders, stroke, central nervous infection, language disorders, and autism for 37 years. His research has explored fundamental mechanisms of neuronal injury, the neurobiology of synaptic transmission, and the development of new therapies for epilepsy. These studies have been the subject of over 100 research publications and invited reviews. He is a member of the Child Neurology Society, the American Neurological Association, the American Epilepsy Society, and the Society for Neuroscience. His research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, where he was a Javits Neuroscience Awardee.
