On March 16, 2008, St. Mary's Hospital was replaced by the new Mercy Medical Center. The new $145 million, 350,000-square-foot campus and its 200-bed hospital will be one of the most technologically advanced hospitals in the United States, including the a new electronic health record system.
The new hospital was built with the intention of being a total healing environment, so hallways for patients and visitors are separate from staff corridors in order to reduce noise, every patient room is private and there will be one nurse to every two intensive-care patients. In addition, the seventh floor of the hospital was completed as a shell for the addition of more beds if needed, and additional towers can be constructed at either end of the hospital to add more space without disturbing patients.
Mercy Medical Center replaces St. Mary's Hospital, built in 1950. Prior to the dedication and blessing of the new hospital on March 1, co-workers, community members and Church representatives walked the 4.7-mile route from the old hospital to the new site carrying rosary beads, holy water and Mercy's mission statement to relay the history of the old hospital to the new one. The chapel at the new Mercy Medical Center will be known as St. Mary’s Chapel to carry on the legacy of the hospital.
