Sisters of Mercy Health System Names Chief Medical Officer

St. Louis (May 12, 2009) – The Sisters of Mercy Health System (Mercy) has named Glenn Mitchell, MD, MPH, to the position of chief medical officer. He also will retain his current position of vice president for clinical safety. In this dual role, Dr. Mitchell will work closely with physician leaders across Mercy on key issues such as physician credentialing, peer review and clinical case management, while continuing to oversee Mercy’s Safety Center.

Dr. Mitchell joined Mercy in 2007 as vice president–clinical safety. Previously, he served for 21 years with the U.S. Army Medical Corps, retiring in March 2005 at the rank of Colonel and from the position of Commander at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso. He also has served as chief of clinical operations, Office of the Army Surgeon General, in San Antonio, and as Command Surgeon, U.S. Southern Command, in Miami. Dr. Mitchell holds both masters of science in engineering and doctor of medicine degrees from Brown University in Providence, R.I. and is certified in emergency medicine and preventive medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians, Past Trustee and Vice Chair of the American Board of Preventive Medicine, and Fellow and Past President of the Aerospace Medical Association.
