Sisters of Mercy Health System Names VP of Clinical Safety and VP/General Counsel
ST. LOUIS (April 7, 2007) – The Sisters of Mercy Health System (Mercy) has named Glenn Mitchell, M.D., MPH, as Vice President of Clinical Safety and Philip Wheeler, J.D., as Vice President and General Counsel.
In his newly-created role, Dr. Mitchell will work in collaboration with Mercy’s hospitals, leaders and physicians to cultivate a culture of safety, including the development of a Mercy Safety Center. He previously served for 21 years with the U.S. Army Medical Corps, retiring in March 2005 at the rank of Colonel and from the position of Commander at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas. Dr. Mitchell also served as Chief of Clinical Operations, Office of the Army Surgeon General, in San Antonio, Texas, and as Command Surgeon, U.S. Southern Command, in Miami, Fla. Dr. Mitchell holds master of science in engineering and doctor of medicine degrees from Brown University in Providence, R.I. He is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and Fellow and Past President of the Aerospace Medical Association.
Mr. Wheeler has responsibility for providing executive leadership and overseeing the delivery of legal services to all entities within the health system. He previously served as Assistant General Counsel for the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Wheeler also has held the positions of Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary for HealthTrust Inc.-The Hospital Company; Executive Vice President and co-founder of NetCare Health Systems, Inc.; and Senior Counsel of Hospital Corporation of America. Mr. Wheeler received his law degree from New York University School of Law and holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Miami University of Ohio.
