- Bob Bergamini, M.D., pediatric oncologist at the David C. Pratt Cancer
Center at St. John's Mercy Medical Center, was recognized in October
2004 as a Health Care Hero by St. Louis Business Journal. Dr. Bergamini
won in the physician category, honoring physicians who show exemplary
performance in their fields. A physician at St. John's Mercy since 1985,
Dr. Bergamini is board certified in both pediatrics and pediatric hematology/oncology.
In 1990, he designed the Pediatric Cancer & Hematology Center at St.
John's Mercy to introduce the concept of a comprehensive pediatric outpatient
cancer center in the St. Louis area. Dr. Bergamini received his medical
degree in 1978 from Albany Medical College in Albany, New York.
- Eighteen physicians at St. John's Mercy Medical Center achieved perfect
patient satisfaction scores in 2004 as measured in an annual survey
by Press, Ganey Associates, the healthcare community's top satisfaction
measurement and improvement firm. The physicians achieving this honor
were James Boyd, M.D., Robert Ferrara, M.D., Kathy Maupin, M.D., D.
Micheale Meents, M.D., Thomas McCaffrey, M.D., Cynthia Mueller, M.D.,
Selwyn Picker, M.D., Thomas Shaner, M.D., Thomas Whalen, M.D., Don Bale,
M.D., Alan Camp, M.D., Justin Durel, M.D., Thomas Francel, M.D., Leslie
Mezei, M.D., Michael Mimlitz, M.D., Jay Padratzik, M.D., Blasé Pignotti,
M.D. and Renee Stein, M.D.. Each of the doctors were rated on the following
categories: overall patient satisfaction, skill, friendliness/courtesy,
time spent with patients, concern about patient questions/worries, and
willingness to keep patients informed.
- Rodney Thorley, M.D., rehabilitation physiatrist at St. John's Mercy
Medical Center, was certified in March 2004 under the Spinal Cord Subspecialty
of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
- Mercy Health Research Director Tim Smith, M.D., served as a faculty
adviser at a Spring 2004 meeting of an international migraine research
and education panel. The meeting, "ZAP Migraine," addressed the need
for better migraine diagnosis and treatment in the primary care setting.
Following the conference, Dr. Smith presented at the 2nd annual international
"Headache Care for Practicing Clinicians" congress.
- John Mantovani, M.D., pediatric neurologist, chairman of Mercy Children's
Specialists and medical director of the St. John's Mercy Child Development
Center, was honored at the Progressive Youth Connection's Sixth Annual
World of Children's Awards. The organization recognizes individuals
and organizations that have made a difference in the lives and futures
of children. Dr. Mantovani was chosen based on his work with children
in the community with neurological illnesses and developmental delays.
- Mercy Medical Group internal medicine physician Nabiel AlKhouri,
M.D., who practices with Mercy Neighborhood Health Center, was the focus
of a June 2004 feature article, Faces of WellPoint, published by Blue
Cross and Blue Shield of Missouri. The article discussed the challenges
faced by the health center in serving an ethnically diverse population,

Health System of Northwest Arkansas
- In December 2003, John Huskins, M.D., of Rogers Medical Center in
Arkansas was among the first in the area to offer a new laser treatment
for facial acne. Dr. Huskins has previously used this laser for other
cosmetic purposes, but the ability to utilize this technology for the
treatment of acne gave his patients a new, exciting alternative to traditional
treatments, which can be ineffective and, in some cases, have been associated
with significant health risks.
- W. Lindley Diacon, M.D., Radiology, at Rogers Medical Center has been
elected to the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers
(ARDMS) Obstetrics/Gynecology Exam Development Task Force (EDTF) as
a subject matter expert. The ARDMS is an independent nonprofit organization
that administers examinations and awards credentials in the areas of
diagnostic medical sonography, diagnostic cardiac sonography and vascular
technology. As an EDTF member, Dr. Diacon will be responsible for exam
development including determining exam content, writing exam questions,
determining minimum competency standards and reviewing/validating scores.
He will attend annual meetings with EDTF co-members in Washington, D.C.
with other meetings throughout the year as needed.
- Mercy Health System of Northwest Arkansas announced the availability
of Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) in September 2004 at Mercy Health Center
in Bentonville. Abbas Raza, M.D., a certified endoscopic ultrasonographer
is performing this procedure after completing an Advanced Gastroenterology
Fellowship at the Jefferson Digestive Diseases Institute and Thomas
Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Penn. MHSNWA is the only
health system in northwest Arkansas to have this technology.
- Ear, nose and throat physicians Randall Black and John Lee at NWA
Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic now use a 3D navigation system called VectorVision®
ENT/Kolibri™ ENT. VectorVision ENT/Kolibri ENT is an Image-Guided Surgery
system (IGS), which gives otolaryngologists the ability to view their
instruments within the patient's sinus anatomy throughout the course
of the operation. This IGS system was designed by BrainLAB, a leading
innovator of image-guided surgery and stereotactic radiosurgery systems.

St.
Joseph's Mercy Health Center - Hot Springs, AR
- Dr. Michael K. Atta, a board certified internal medicine physician
specializing in occupational medicine with St. Joseph's Business Health,
earned a Certified Aviation Medical Examiner license in December 2003.
As a result, Dr. Atta, who had to complete on-line courses and training
with the Federal Aviation Association in Oklahoma City, can now conduct
the physical exams required for second and third-class airmen. Second-class
airmen include flight engineers and pilots who can fly company jets,
while third-class airmen include student pilots and pilots who can fly
private planes.
- In September 2004, Greg A. St. John, M.D., accepted a position on
the St. Joseph's Mercy Health Center board of directors. Dr. St. John,
who is a practicing member of the Central Arkansas Cardiovascular Institute,
is board certified in cardiovascular disease and internal medicine.
He attended medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical
Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock before completing an internship, residency
and cardiology fellowship at University Hospital. Dr. St. John replaces
Dr. Robert Johnson on St. Joseph's board of directors as his final three-year

John's Health System - Springfield, MO
- Charles Woodall, D.O., St. John's Family Medicine of Branson West,
recently qualified as a certified medical review officer. Certified
MROs work with employers to provide drug testing mandated by the U.S..
Department of Transportation and the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services. MROs make the final determination of whether a positive laboratory
test represents substance abuse.
- St. John's pulmonologist and chief of staff Donald Wantuck, M.D.,
is one of three individuals who was honored in Oct. 2004 at the Springfield
Area Chamber of Commerce's 20th annual Salute to Health Care banquet.
The chamber presents the event each year to recognize the medical achievements
and community service of local leaders in the health care industry.
Wantuck introduced the pulmonary specialty to the Ozarks and was the
first pulmonologist to practice bronchoscopy as part of his specialty
in the 1970s. While maintaining his large pulmonary practice, Wantuck
serves as chief of staff at St. John's Hospital, a position he was first
elected to in 1981. After serving a two-year term, he was twice re-elected
to the position beginning in 2000 and also serves as Board President
of St. John's Health System. Dr. Wantuck was also the recipient of the
Missouri Hospital Association's 2004 Excellence in Governance Award
in the spring. In January 2004, Dr. Wantuck was re-elected chief of
staff by his physician peers with an overwhelming 95 percent of the
vote. The Missouri Hospital Association presented a 2004 Excellence
in Governance award to Dr. Wantuck.
- St. John's Clinic was awarded the Preeminence Award from the American
Medical Group Association at its national conference in New Orleans
March 12, 2004. The AMGA Medical Group Preeminence Award is presented
annually to AMGA member groups or IPA physician-administrator leadership
teams for exceptional leadership; innovation and vision; contributions
to the advancement of quality; effective healthcare delivery practices
and structure; and outstanding contributions to the local public community
in which the medical group or IPA is located.
- St. John's Clinic was chosen as a 2004 Success Story winner by Press
Ganey, the healthcare industry's leading independent vendor of satisfaction
measurement and improvement. St. John's was one of six winners chosen
from 122 submissions and was the only physician clinic chosen. The clinic
was evaluated by examining a number of factors including innovative
and unique aspects of programs, use of satisfaction measurement data,
synergy of clinical performance improvement initiatives and customer
satisfaction, goals set and attained, leadership involvement and improvements

Edward Mercy Medical Center - Fort Smith, AR
- According to the American Medical Association, 62 percent of the
physicians in the United States are board-certified. While board certification
is not required for the practice of medicine, it is an indication of
a physician's level of experience and training. At St. Edward Mercy,
97 percent of the active medical staff were board certified as of January
