If you are expecting a baby, you probably have questions about feeding your newborn. Mercy invites you to consider breastfeeding - an ideal beginning for both you and your baby. Mother’s milk is the perfect food for infants. It has the right balance of nutrients and strengthens resistance to infection. It is convenient and economical for the family.
One of the greatest benefits of breastfeeding is a special closeness that you and your baby share, and with preparation and support, you and your baby will experience the special relationship that comes with breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding is supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Surgeon General of the United States and the World Health Organization.
Mercy offers both inpatient and outpatient breastfeeding services, including breastfeeding classes and individual consultations to assist you and your family. These services are available to every new mother and are free for
Teddy Bear Club members.
Inpatient Care
While mothers and babies are in the hospital, lactation specialists are available during your stay to assist new mothers with breastfeeding. If you would like assistance with breastfeeding your baby, please let your nurse know.
Newborn Intensive Care
Mothers with babies in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) can use a special breastfeeding room equipped with electric breast pumps. This comfortable room offers a quiet place for babies and their families. Schedule an appointment with the Inpatient Lactation staff if you’d like assistance with learning how to breastfeed your baby. At discharge of your baby, schedule follow up appointments with your pediatrician or the
Mother & Baby Support Center until your baby is nursing well. Call the Mother & Baby Support Center for breast pumping or milk supply questions.
