Hepatitis A Vaccinations

What is Hepatitis A?
Hepatitis A is a contagious liver disease that results from infection with the Hepatitis A virus. It can range from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a severe illness lasting several months. It may be caused by toxins, certain drugs, some diseases, heavy alcohol use, and bacterial or viral infections.

How does Hepatitis A spread?
Hepatitis A is usually spread when a person ingests fecal matter from contact with objects, food, or drinks contaminated by the feces or stool of an infected person. An infected person does not wash his or her hands properly after going to the bathroom and touches other objects or food. This is why the City of St. Louis Department of Health requires all restaurant employees to be vaccinated. A parent or caregiver does not properly wash his or her hands after changing diapers or cleaning up the stool of an infected person

What are the symptoms?
Some people with Hepatitis A do not have symptoms. If there are symptoms they may include: fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, clay-colored bowel movements, joint pain, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). If symptoms occur, they usually appear anywhere from 2-6 weeks after exposure. Symptoms usually last less than 2 months, although some people can be ill for as long as 6 months.

How do you treat Hepatitis A?
There is no specific medicine to treat or cure hepatitis A. If you have the virus, you should get plenty of rest, eat a balanced diet and avoid alcohol and acetaminophen (one brand: Tylenol). Both alcohol and medicines like acetaminophen are broken down by the liver and may increase the speed of liver damage in people who have hepatitis. You may need to stay in the hospital for a short time if you get dehydrated, have severe pain, suddenly become confused or develop bleeding problems.

The best way to prevent Hepatitis A is to get vaccinated! Vaccine is series of 2 shots – 6 months apart
