Mercy’s tumor registrar collects information about cancer diagnosis and enters it into state and national databases. We use it to learn how environmental concerns, occupational exposure, life habits, and other factors that may be contributing to the incidence of cancer. We also measure the impact of current cancer treatments, screening processes and preventative measures. Hospitals use this data to help identify the cancers found in their area so they can determine the best way to meet the needs of their communities.
The registration office follows patients for their lifetimes. Currently the David C. Pratt Tumor Registry communicates with over 40,000 patients each year.
The tumor registrar also coordinates cancer care conferences. These conferences include physicians, including oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, and family physicians, as well as other staff involved in the cancer care process. Together, they review different cancer diagnoses and determine the best treatment on a case by case basis.
