Student Experiences

Shadowing

Mercy Springfield Communities offers a variety of student/observation experiences.

  • A shadow/observation experience is for observation only without any hands-on interaction. It is limited to 40 hours or less (within one year) and you are not required to be enrolled in a school.
  • An individual learning experience is a hands-on experience (either clinical or non-clinical). This experience requires you to be enrolled in a school program unless you are seeking an unpaid internship or are a professional approved to do research at Mercy.

Medical Explorers

Mercy Springfield Medical Explorer Post #339 is a youth health care career exploration program jointly sponsored by Mercy Hospital Springfield and the Boy Scouts of America Learning for Life program. The overall purpose of Medical Explorers is to provide worksite-based experiences for young men and women ages 15 through 20. Education through observation enables youth to make an informed career decision.

Information about the Mercy Medical Explorer program and enrollment process will be shared on September 10, 2019 at 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Hammons Heart Institute Auditorium at the end of the regular monthly business meeting.  Medical Explorer candidates and parents are encouraged to attend this meeting for a program overview and to answer any questions about becoming a Mercy Medical Explorer.

Explorer candidates applying for the Fall 2019 session must attend the mandatory orientation on September 24, 2019 at 5:00-7:30 p.m. at Mercy Hospital Springfield in the Catherine McAuley Conference Center (located in the Main Hospital; South Entrance; first hallway to the right). Candidates must bring completed printed copies of the Mercy Medical Explorer Application and the Learning for Life Youth Application to orientation. Yearly dues must be paid prior to orientation using the online registration site available after September 10th. Registration fees may be paid online by credit/debit card only. We are unable to accept cash or check payments.

All application requirements including payment of annual dues must be completed before the Medical Explorer candidate may attend the monthly business meeting on October 8, 2019 at 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Hammons Heart Institute Auditorium and sign up for independent clinical rotations.
