Soul on Fire – the John O'Leary Story
Mercy first met John O’Leary as a nine-year-old boy — with burns over 100% of his body and a 1% chance of survival. A true story of hope and resilience, John’s miraculous recovery has since inspired millions of people to live with courage and positivity.
In his motivational speaking and best-selling books, John has credited the caregivers at Mercy with helping him survive the terrible accident that changed the course of his life. Through love and compassion, the team at Mercy helped him slowly heal and overcome impossible odds, and that story is now being told in a major motion picture, showing in select theaters in October, then available through streaming.
Mercy – a Legacy of Compassion
“Almost 200 years of faith and love have shaped the way Mercy cares for our patients and their families,” says Steve Mackin, president of Mercy. “And we are honored to continue our tradition of selfless service today.”
As John O’Leary says, the answer to a call to serve is “Yes!” And the caregivers at Mercy continue to serve our patients with compassion and hope.

The John O’Leary Movie
“This is a love letter to our community,” says O’Leary, referencing how the movie was partially filmed in St. Louis. John Corbett stars as his father, and William H. Macy transforms into legendary Cardinals announcer Jack Buck, who played an instrumental role in O’Leary’s recovery.
“I’m overwhelmed by how God is using this story for something bigger than I could have fathomed, and that’s what’s happening here,” says O’Leary. “There is a need for hope, so let’s get this word out that in spite of the struggles you face… the foundation is firm and better days are ahead.”

"The mountains that were moved to make and promote this film were in service to one goal – to change lives," shared John. “I believe in my bones that when people watch this film, they will be moved to consider the positive impact they can have in someone’s life. And I’m convicted that the more people who open their eyes to that possibility, the better our world will be.”
