Dr. Hoekzema graduated from Washington University and completed residency at Mercy Family Medicine. He has been teaching for over 20 years and currently supervises the program’s adult medicine curriculum.

Dr. Cole graduated from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed residency at Mercy Family Medicine. She supervises the program’s Pediatrics, Community Medicine, and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment curriculum.

Melissa Moceri
Melissa Moceri joined Mercy Family Medicine in 2013 as the program coordinator. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Advertising from South East Missouri State University in 2011.

Teaching Faculty

The faculty of the Family Medicine Residency Program includes 9 family physicians, one clinical pharmacists and one behavioral scientist. In addition, the size and scope of the Medical Center enable residents to learn from a variety of faculty from other outstanding departments.

John Allan Campbell, MD
Dr. Campbell graduated from Washington University and completed residency at Mercy Family Medicine. He then completed a fellowship in geriatrics. He now supervises the program’s geriatric curriculum. His scholarly interest is in end-of-life care.

Peter G. Danis III, MD
Dr. Danis graduated from St. Louis University and completed residency at Mercy Family Medicine. Teaching for over 25 years, he supervises the program’s Practice Management and Quality Improvement curriculum. He is also a certified NFP consultant.

Dr. King is a graduate of St. Louis University School of Medicine and completed his Family Medicine residency at Mercy Family Medicine St. Louis. Dr. King supervises resident care weekly in the Family Medicine Clinic.

Dr. Mayes graduated from St. Louis University and completed residency at Mercy Family Medicine. She supervises the program’s ambulatory curriculum. Her scholarly interest is in medical leadership, low-risk obstetrics, and medical weight loss.

Dr. Phruttitum graduated from University of Missouri-Kansas City and completed residency at McLaren Family Medicine. Teaching for over 15 years, he supervises the program’s Procedures, Dermatology, and general surgery curriculum.

Dr. Verry graduated from University of Missouri and completed his residency in Denver, CO. He completed his fellowship in sports medicine. Now, he supervises the program’s orthopedic and sports medicine curriculum.

Dr. Smith graduated from the University of Tennessee and completed residencies at Methodist University Hospital and West Virginia University Healthcare. Her scholarly interests include anticoagulation, heart failure, and cirrhosis.

Dr. Openlander is a licensed psychologist and received his doctorate from Saint Louis University in 1981. His areas of interest include marriage and family therapy, anxiety disorders and the connection between stress and illness.
