Mercy Graduate Medical Education - Transitional Year

The Transitional Year Program (TYP) is designed to provide educational and clinical experience to meet the needs of the individual PGY-1 resident as he or she prepares to enter a medical or surgical specialty categorical residency. The program format and its content are structured to conform to ACGME guidelines. The majority of time in the program is spent on ACGME-accredited services. A typical program year consists of two months of inpatient internal medicine, one month coronary care unit, one month trauma-neuro critical care, one month medical-surgical ICU, one month each of ambulatory medicine, emergency medicine, psychiatry and surgery. The remaining three months of the residency training include one or more of the following electives: anesthesiology, all of the sub-specialties of internal medicine and surgery, OB/GYN, pediatrics, neurosciences and physical medicine. Away electives are available. Research electives are encouraged, but count as away electives.

All conferences and teaching exercises at Mercy St. Louis are open to transitional year residents as their schedules permit. An ACLS course is provided and participation is required before the training program is started.
