Mercy Family Medicine has a longstanding history of faculty and residents using their skills for the service of others in our global community. The program feels that there are valuable learning opportunities in both short term medical missions and longer international rotations. Residents may choose to do this in two settings: First, as part of a medical mission’s team that spends one week of intense service led by faculty as part of a larger multi-specialty team affiliated with an established medical mission organization. Secondly, residents may choose to spend a maximum of one month away on an international rotation approved by the program director. Recent residents and alumni have completed mission work in El Salvador, Ethiopia, Haiti, Peru, Uganda and other locations. Mercy Hospital sponsors two $1500 scholarships annually for residents planning medical missions and/or international rotations. Residents completing global rotations are also encouraged to obtain their professional certificate from The Institute for Internation Medicine (go to https://www.inmed.us to learn more).
