- Introduce the student to the philosophical and practical aspects of Family Medicine.
- Provide an opportunity for the student to begin developing the knowledge and skills needed to provide comprehensive primary care.
Because the Mercy Olive-Mason Family Medicine Clinic sponsors Mercy’s Family Medicine residency, the following Mercy Graduate Medical Education faculty physicians’ prior commitment to residents and medical students precludes their ability to precept FNP students: John Campbell, Sarah Cole, Peter Danis, Grant Hoekzema, Serin Phruttitum, Christian Verry, Stefanie White and Lauren Wilfling. We wish our nurse practitioner student colleagues the best in their studies.
Regarding rotation opportunities for international medical graduates/students, our program does not sponsor externships or observerships. Applications of current international medical students will be considered, contingent upon the student being a permanent resident or U.S. citizen, and subject to availability and our current commitments to U.S. medical schools.
Students interested in applying for a rotation should contact the program coordinator:

Inpatient or sub-internship rotations are granted to fourth year medical students who intend to enter a career in family medicine. The rotation is available year round.
For the sub-internship, the student will spend the week working with the Family Medicine Inpatient Team. The sub-internship involves working with our family medicine inpatient team with the expectation of caring for 2-3 patients daily and doing at least one admission per day. In addition the student may be assigned night shifts throughout the rotation or on a date of his or her choosing.
Third-year medical students are assigned their required clerkships from local affiliated medical schools. Fourth-year medical students may apply for an audition ambulatory rotation between August and January and must be interested in family medicine as a career. The ambulatory rotation takes place in the family medicine clinic. The student will be under direct supervision of senior residents and faculty.
