A tornado struck Joplin, Mo. and did hit St. John’s Regional Medical Center. The hospital sustained extensive damage the was completely evacuated. It is unknown how many of the 183 hospitalized patients were injured as a result of the tornado. Patients continue to be triaged and transported by various means to hospitals across the region, including to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. Both St. John’s hospitals are part of Sisters of Mercy Health System (Mercy). Mercy has hospitals in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri. Through a centralized incident command center in Springfield, the integrated Mercy system was able to deploy resources, including hospital-owned ground and air ambulances with medical personnel and substantial medical and drug supplies thanks to a robust supply chain division.
