OK Scholars Get Mercy Money

June 2, 2011

Three Oklahoma students are among 20 scholars in a four-state area named as recipients of the 2011 Charles Thoele Scholarship. The Mercy-sponsored academic award provides recipients with $1,000 each to be used toward educational expenses at undergraduate and vocational-technical schools during the coming school year.

This year’s Oklahoma winners are:

  • Laura Henson, daughter of Mercy’s compliance director Sheila Henson. The Oklahoma City native attended the Classen School of Advanced Studies and is pursuing a pharmacy degree at the University of Oklahoma.
  • Heather Edge is the daughter of Ron Edge, computer application coordinator at Ardmore’s Mercy Memorial Health Center. Heather is studying nursing at the Ardmore Higher Education Center.
  • Oklahoma City’s Elizabeth Rischard – a graduate of Sisters of Mercy sponsored-Mount St. Mary High School – is majoring in anthropology at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis.

The Charles E. Thoele Scholarship Program was established by Mercy in 1993 to honor Mr. Thoele, a retired Mercy executive and board member.

The program awards 18 $1,000 scholarships annually to dependents of Mercy co-workers. Two additional scholarships are awarded each year to students from Sisters of Mercy-sponsored high schools.

This year’s Thoele Scholarship recipients were selected from a pool of 204 applicants. Recipients are selected based on academic achievement and personal character, as demonstrated by participating in school and community activities, work experience, leadership qualities, awards and honors, goal setting, and personal and school references.
