Spencer Lee, 2010 Fort Scott High
School graduate, performs during the “Dream
Big” Charity Concert to benefit Mercy Health
Center’s Cancer Care Expansion campaign.

Spencer Lee and a “dream team” of professional singer/songwriters and producers from Los Angeles performed for a full house last Saturday netting $7,000 for the Mercy’s Cancer Care Unit Expansion.

Lee and his band of music industry colleagues including Windy Wagner, Ken Stacey, Chris Price and Ryan Petersen performed original music written by the artists. Lee and Wagner also performed a portion of a song they are currently co-writing for singers Faith Hill and Tim McGraw.

“It feels good to be home,” Lee said during the concert.  It’s great to have the support of all my family and friends here tonight.”

The Mercy Health Center Foundation Board sponsored the event as part of the $250,000 fundraising campaign to relocate and expand the current cancer care unit. Proceeds from the “Dream Big” Concert puts total funds raised at $206,043.

“We wish the Mercy Foundation Board  the very best of success in improving health care at Mercy and are so grateful we could help out in our own way,” said Ken Stacey, professional singer/songwriter and “Dream Big” performer.  “The Fort Scott community should not only be proud of Spencer Lee, but also of the entire community for supporting Spencer so enthusiastically...it was inspiring.”

“The event would not have been possible without the generous support of our underwriters,” said Tina Rockhold, Mercy’s Marketing and Development Director. “We thank Dave and Sharon Shepherd of Shepherd Team Auto Plaza for covering the performer’s transportation and lodging; Tim and Deb McKenney of KOMB/KMDO radio for advertising; and Jim and Paulette Smith of Liberty Theatre for the use of the wonderful venue.”

During high school, Lee was a local grocery store carryout boy who performed in high school music programs and regional “Idol” competitions.  Just over a year ago he stepped on a plane bound for L.A. ready to pursue his dream as a professional singer/songwriter.  In a short time he has launched his career into high gear writing songs for Disney and ABC TV, performing at the 83rd Academy Awards, as well as singing at Disney World, Disney World in Japan Easter Parade and performed background vocals for American Idol and “GLEE.”

Wagner, a successful session vocalist, has toured worldwide as a background singer for k.d. lang. She has also performed live with some of the music industry’s most celebrated artists including Elton John, James Taylor, Shawn Colvin, Enya and Casadra Wilson, among other noted performers.  Her professional credits boast some of the most highly recognized names and often heard voices across the globe, such as Barbara Streisand, Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, Kelly Clarkson, Michael Buble, Jennifer Lopez, Selena Gomez, and many more.  Wagner is also a regular singer on the hit television show “GLEE.” She is also vocal contracting the upcoming musical "Rock of Ages" starring Tom Cruise.  She has many credits in TV commercials and film; High School Musical 2 & 3, Jungle Book 2, Legally Blonde, Repo Men, Barbie, Coke-Cola, Chevy and more.

Stacey is in his second season with American Idol as a vocal coach and vocal arranger for the show. His music career spans over 20 years.  He was also one of the four backing vocalists for Michael Jackson on the “THIS IS IT” tour and can be seen in the “THIS IS IT” movie/documentary.  Stacey toured with Elton John as the main backing vocalist and acoustic guitarist.    Most notably, Stacey sang at the public memorial for Michael Jackson, held in 2009 at the Staples Center before an estimated 2.5 billion viewers!

Grammy Award winner Ryan Petersen was exposed to music by his father Randy Petersen, professional composer.  Petersen is currently signed to Sony/ATV Music Publishing as a songwriter. He engineered Switchfoot’s latest release “Hello Hurricane” which earned him a Grammy.  Other credits include co writing Simple Plan’s 1st single “Jet Lag feat. Natasha Bedingfield”, producing two Jonas Brother’s songs for their hit TV show “JONAS”, work with American Idol winner Kris Allen, and Fox’s hit TV show “GLEE.”

Price, a multi instrumentalist, singer/songwriter/producer from Miami, is currently making his first solo album, recorded entirely on his iPhone.  Price is involved in several LA-based rock projects, such as Taylor Locke & the Roughs, and his own band with his 2 younger brothers.  Price has written over 200 original songs including co-writes with Macy Gray, Ashlee Simpson and Jose Feliciano.

“Thanks to this group of incredibly talented musicians the Mercy Foundation Board is a step closer to meeting their goal, but we still need to fill the gap,” said Rockhold.  “Naming room opportunities are still available at the $20,000 level.  Recognition is also available in the new waiting room for donations over $500.”

In June 2008, Mercy Health Center opened a Fort Scott branch of the Cancer Center of Kansas, bringing cancer care to patients in the area. Over the past three years, the demand for chemotherapy treatment in Fort Scott has grown.  The current location lacks adequate space for patient‘s chemotherapy treatments, infusions, appointments with oncologists and waiting area for caregivers.
