Jeffrey A. Johnston has been named president of Mercy Hospital St. Louis, effective Sept. 1. Johnston will report to Mike McCurry, who has served as interim president since August 2010. McCurry holds the position of regional president for Mercy’s east Missouri area, as well as executive vice president and chief operating officer for Mercy’s seven-state health ministry.

Johnston joined Mercy in 2001. Since December 2008, he has served as president of St. Edward Mercy Medical Center in Fort Smith, Ark., where he was instrumental in expanding Mercy’s physician group as well as leading a community master planning process. Prior roles with Mercy included senior vice president–operations for Mercy Memorial Health Center, Ardmore, Okla. Prior to joining Mercy, Johnston held several leadership positions over a six-year period with MetroHealth System, a large health care provider organization in Cleveland, Ohio. Johnstonholds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Okla., and a master’s degree in business administration and hospital and health administration from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

“Jeff will bring the same exceptional leadership skills to the St. Louis area that he has demonstrated in other Mercy communities. With a forward-looking plan for growth and service expansion throughout the greater St. Louis area, Jeff has the experience and skills to work with our physicians, leaders and co-workers in making our strategic vision a reality,” said McCurry. “As we move into the future, I look forward to working alongside Jeff and others at Mercy in my continuing role as regional president.”

Kim Day, regional president for Mercy’s central region, which includes the state of Arkansas, will serve as interim president for St. Edward Mercy in Fort Smith while a search process is undertaken.
