St. John’s St. Francis Hospital employee, Karen Gaddy, received a Missouri Hospital Association (MHA) scholarship to help fund the cost of her continued education. Gaddy is a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Emergency Department at St. John’s St. Francis Hospital and also works a night shift at St. John’s Hospital - Cassville.
MHA awarded 189 scholarships this year to healthcare workers at various hospitals across the state. Nearly 2,000 people applied for the funds, which cover 50% tuition reimbursement. For Gaddy, that means up to $4,000 in assistance.
Gaddy has been a member of St. John’s Health System since 1984 where she began as an ER technician. “Being the recipient of this scholarship is a godsend,” she says, as it is helping her complete her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at Missouri State University and train as a Nurse Practitioner.
She says that with the assistance of her department manager and HR department, the completion of the application was “not too difficult” and has helped with the obstacle of continuing her education. St John’s is committed to assisting co-workers in furthering their healthcare careers and has among the lowest nurse vacancy rates in the country at 4.8%, compared with national rates of 5.4%.
Gaddy will be graduating from Missouri State University in December 2012.
