St. Charles County Pediatrics has received a very special honor after being nominated for the “Above and Beyond Award” by one of its own co-workers, medical assistant Melissa Wittneben, a sergeant in the Army Reserve. The award was presented by Bob Schure, representing the awards committee for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, part of the Department of Defense (DOD-ESGR). The award is given to employers who go “above and beyond” in their support of co-workers who are on deployment. This award is the second award given to the practice – they also received the Patriot Award for their support. The Above and Beyond Award is given to a small percentage of employers who are nominated by Reserve members.
For the past year, Sgt. Wittneben was deployed to Qatar with the Army Reserve, serving with the 332nd Medical Logistics Company. She has been a member of the Army Reserve for the past five years, but this was her first deployment overseas. While she was deployed, she and other members of her unit received multiple care packages, emails, letters and cards from her friends and supporters in the medical practice back home. She said this support meant the world to her while she was overseas.
“You have not only made my deployment easier by knowing you were supporting me and thinking of me and my fellow comrades,” she said. “But even my return shows you all truly care. You have welcomed me with open arms. I can’t thank you enough.”
