Joseph Kahn, MD, has been named president of Mercy Children’s Hospital Services (MCHS) and Christine Crain, RN, MSN, has been appointed chief operating officer of MCHS. In his new role, Dr. Kahn has responsibility for integrating the care of children across the four-state Mercy system (Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansas). He will be working closely with Crain and a group of pediatric leaders from each of the 30 communities served by Mercy hospitals.
Dr. Kahn has been serving as chair of the Department of Pediatrics for Mercy Children’s Hospital for the past five years, as well as seeing patients part time at Mercy Pediatrics. He received his medical degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine and his residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. He has been a practicing pediatrician for more than 30 years, starting in Sikeston, Mo, and moving to St. Louis in 1987, where he practiced with St. Charles County Pediatrics until 2006. Since 2007 as department chair, he has helped bring awareness to the pediatric services with the naming of Mercy Children’s Hospital, overseen expansion with renovated and new facilities and helped grow the partnership with Ronald McDonald House of Metro St. Louis.
Crain has been senior vice president of operations for Mercy Children’s Hospital since March 2011, as well as service line administrator for Women’s Services - Mercy Hospital St. Louis. Prior to that position, she was chief nursing executive for 21 years with responsibility for the provision of patient care including quality, safety, human resource and financial management. Crain is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society and the American Organization of Nurse Executives. She earned her BSN and MSN at St. Louis University and is certified as an advanced nurse administrator.
