Mercy has named Donn Sorensen to the role of regional president for Mercy’s east Missouri region, and Charles Rehm, MD, to the position of regional chief administrative officer, effective March 12. Sorensen and Rehm will provide executive leadership for all regional activities, bringing greater focus and alignment to how Mercy’s hospitals, physicians and co-workers in the St. Louis and Washington, Mo., areas work together to serve our patients and communities. Their partnership represents Mercy’s administrative/physician leader model, which enables the organization to benefit from both clinical and administrative perspectives and experiences.
Sorensen succeeds Mike McCurry, who has served in an interim role as regional president since 2010. McCurry continues to serve as Mercy’s executive vice president and chief operating officer, with responsibility for overseeing operations across a seven-state region.
As regional president, Sorensen will have overall responsibility for strategy setting, growth and operations. Similar to other Mercy regions, the regional president works closely with the presidents of Mercy hospitals and Mercy Clinic in the region to guide planning, decision-making and achievement of regional and Mercy-wide goals. Dr. Rehm will work closely with Sorensen, bringing his physician leadership skills to bear on strengthening hospital-physician relationships.
Sorensen has more than 25 years of health care experience and has served with Mercy for a dozen of those years. He joined Mercy’s Springfield division in 2000 with responsibility for the physician clinic organization, and under his leadership the clinic was recognized as the nation’s top integrated health care delivery network three times. For the past year, Sorensen has served as chief operating officer for Mercy Clinic in the east Missouri region.
Dr. Rehm, who has served as a member of Mercy’s medical staff since 1975, accepted additional responsibilities as chief administrative officer for Mercy Hospital St. Louis in 2010. His new role expands these responsibilities to the entire region.
“Donn and Dr. Rehm bring complementary strengths and experiences to this new leadership structure,” said McCurry. “Mercy has an exciting future planned in our east Missouri region, and they are ideal partners to lead that effort.”
Mercy is the eighth largest Catholic health care system in the U.S. and serves more than 3 million people annually.
