SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—When it came time for Christina Lehn to find a psychiatrist for her daughter, Sam, she realized how difficult that would be. She couldn’t find one in her community of Rolla, Mo., and it turns out, it’s hard to find one, no matter where you live.
There’s a nationwide shortage of pediatric psychiatrists. But Christina and Sam still visit one regularly, without ever leaving their community. From 100 miles away, Dr. Kyle John, a Mercy pediatric psychiatrist in Springfield, sees them through a camera and television screen. It’s telemedicine, and it’s bringing health care to patients in an innovative way.
