Celebrating and Giving Back

Clearly her little brother’s hospitalizations have made quite an impression on Grace Burke. When Grace’s mother, Mercy co-worker Deidre Burke, began planning a combined birthday party for Grace (10) and her brother Jack (3), Grace suggested a “give back” party.

She requested guests bring gifts for patients at Mercy Children’s Hospital rather than for her and her brother. Grace thought it would be a nice way to show appreciation for the care Jack has received at Mercy Children’s.

“Jack was born five weeks early and spent a month in the NICU,” Deidre explained. “He also has cystic fibrosis so he has spent quite a bit of time here as a patient. My daughters, Grace and Lilly (6) enjoy visiting him because they know they’ll get to play in the child life activity room. The child life therapists are always so welcoming to them and that’s one reason Grace wanted to give back.”

The party was a success. On a recent Saturday, Grace and Jack arrived with a wagon-load of toys to donate to Mercy’s Child Life Department. While they were here, Grace and Jack presented gifts to several surprised and delighted patients who were playing in the activity room.
