ST. LOUIS – In the age of childhood obesity, finding a form of exercise children enjoy can be difficult. When parents look for an organized activity they often find sports programs, which aren't a fit for everyone.
For those who are interested in a noncompetitive, physical activity, Mercy Children’s Hospital is offering yoga classes for children as young as 4 years old, starting in February. The $20 four-week session includes weekly 45-minute classes.
Children derive enormous benefits from yoga. Physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination and body awareness. In addition, their concentration and sense of calmness and relaxation improves.
During yoga, children exercise, play, connect more deeply with the inner self and develop an intimate relationship with the natural world that surrounds them.
“Yoga is a great noncompetitive physical activity that fosters cooperation and compassion - instead of opposition,” said Christa Stauder, Mercy yoga instructor.
Children are asked to dress in comfortable clothing that allows flexible movement. All yoga props and mats will be provided in class. Parents will have a place to sit outside the classroom.
