Mercy Adding Pain Management Clinic

To further expand health care services for Independence area residents, Mercy has announced the addition of a pain management clinic. 
Pain Management Specialist David Tonkin, MD, will offer a clinic on the first and third Tuesday of each month at Mercy Clinic Primary Care, 800 W. Laurel. Dr. Tonkin’s first clinic day will be April 2.
Affiliated with Mercy Clinic Joplin, Dr. Tonkin treats a variety of complex and chronic pain conditions, including pain related to arthritis, cancer, diabetes, headaches, fibromyalgia, strokes, joint pain, shoulder, hip, knee and back pain. Likewise, he offers multiple surgical and non-surgical treatment solutions.
“My greatest sense of accomplishment has come from providing relief to patients who were in excruciating pain,” Tonkin said. “I want to provide that service in the most professional and respectful way.”
Dr. Tonkin is a board certified anesthesiologist and completed a fellowship in Interventional Pain Management at the renowned Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Mich. He received his medical degree from American University of the Caribbean and completed residencies at the Department of Family Practice, West Virginia University – Martinsburg; the Department of Family Practice, University of Pittsburg Medical Center; and the Department of Anesthesia, West Penn Hospital.
Dr. Tonkin also offers clinics at Mercy facilities in Fort Scott, Joplin and Carthage, Mo.
