Strikeout Cancer Game Rescheduled

June 14, 2013

All proceeds from a June 30 American Legion
baseball game will benefit local cancer patients.

Mercy Hospital Jefferson and Leader Publications are teaming up once again to help local cancer patients and honor the memory of two local sports writers.

For the past two years the Warren Hayes Memorial Double Header featured American Legion baseball teams from Festus and Imperial playing in memory of Hayes, the long-time area sports writer and editor for Leader Publications.

In October 2012, Dennis Barnidge the editor and writer for the local News Democrat and Jefferson County Journals for many years lost his battle with cancer, so now the game is being played in honor of both men as the Strikeout Cancer Memorial.

Festus Post 253 and Rock Memorial Post 283 varsity will play the district rivalry game at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 13, at West City Park in Festus. The varsity game will be preceded by a presentation of the colors by the American Legion Post 253 Color Guard, an acknowledgment of cancer survivors, and a ceremonial first pitch. There is no admission charge, but donations will be accepted and a 50/50 raffle is planned. All proceeds benefit cancer education efforts and resources for cancer patients at Mercy Jefferson.
