Two-hour class offers tips for healthy, fun cooking

A technique that dates back hundreds of years could be your ticket to healthier eating -- and a new hobby.

Mercy St. Francis Hospital invites the community to attend an outdoor Dutch oven cooking class on Friday, Nov. 15.  Cammie Younger, a nutrition and health education specialist with University of Missouri Extension, will demonstrate her cooking techniques in the 2-hour class.

“Cammie and her husband actually meet with others and do this type of cooking most weekends,” said registered dietitian Deanna Thompson. “It’s a craft that people have used since pioneer days.”

Whether it’s chili, vegetables or desserts in the giant pot, Dutch oven cooking is not only healthy, but it can help cut utility costs.

The cooking course on Friday, Nov. 15, runs from 10 a.m. to noon outside the front entrance of the Mercy St. Francis Hospital cafeteria, located at 100 W. US Highway 60. Pre-registration is necessary and space is limited. Sign up at the Mercy St. Francis business office or call 417-934-7000. A $5 fee is requested to help defray costs.
