Washington, Mo. – Mercy Hospital Washington is accepting applications for its High School Student Volunteer Summer Program. Applicants must be at least 15 years old, be available to volunteer on a weekly basis and must commit to a minimum of 40 total hours for the summer. The deadline for submitting applications is May 16.
“Hospital volunteering gives students a chance to learn job skills and also give their time and talents to people in need,” said Robin Brown, volunteer services supervisor. “In this environment, many students learn values and have experiences they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.”
Students must have at least a C-plus average or above, as indicated on a copy of their last report card, and a letter of recommendation from their school guidance counselor or equivalent. These must be submitted, along with a completed application, before the volunteer department can assign a volunteer position.
Application packets for the program are available at the information desk in the hospital lobby, from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. The number of teens accepted into the program is determined by the number of requests for student volunteers from various departments in the hospital.
After submitting an application, students should call Volunteer Services at 636-239-8272 to schedule a personal interview. Interviews will be held between May 19 and May 30. Before beginning the summer program, student volunteers must take a tuberculin skin test and a drug screening. Both will be paid for and coordinated by the hospital. They also must attend an orientation program Thursday, June 5.
