ST. LOUIS - When you ask someone in St. Louis where they were born, the likely answer is Mercy. While the Sisters of Mercy have always focused on caring for women and children, it was Sister Michael Marie Flannery, RSM, director of Maternal Infant Health, who helped pave the way for maternity care in the St. Louis area.
Before her retirement in 1991, Sr. Michael Marie grew Mercy Hospital St. Louis (then St. John’s Mercy Medical Center) to 6,000 births per year and laid the foundation for what has become the premier maternity center in the area. Today, Mercy Hospital St. Louis welcomes more than 8,000 babies each year.
Sr. Michael Marie was honored with a dedication and plaque in the Maternity Welcome Center, naming it the Sister Michael Marie Flannery Maternity Welcome Center.
