Health and Fitness Expo provides free screenings April 26

April 18, 2014

Children's bicycle helmets for $5 are always a big hit
at the annual Mercy Health and Fitness Expo.

Whether you are looking for health screenings for yourself, bicycle helmets for your kids, or just a chance to win tickets to a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game, the Mercy Health and Fitness Expo has it all.

Formerly known as the Family Health Fair, the annual event returns to Mercy Hospital Jefferson from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 26, in the hospital conference center.

More than 45 vendors and health care representatives from the hospital will be participating in the baseball-themed event. St. Louis Cardinals mascot Fred Bird is scheduled to attend at 11 a.m. A drawing for two tickets to a Cardinals game will be held at 11:45 a.m. for all attendees who complete a Health Expo participation form.

The event will offer new bicycle helmets for children, with free fitting assistance, for $5. A modified Blender Bike will allow those willing to pedal to make their own free smoothie, and drawings for attendance prizes will be held each hour.

Free health screenings will be provided for high blood pressure, body mass index, depression, hearing, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and amblyopia (lazy) eye for children. A voucher for a complete lipid profile (cholesterol) screening will be available for $10. Free take-home colorectal screening kits will also be available.

Dawn Nelms, RD, LD, clinical nutrition manager at Mercy Jefferson, will conduct a healthy cooking demonstration.
