Afton Hyer joins Mercy as speech-language pathologist

Afton Hyer, speech-language pathologist, has joined Mercy to provide speech therapy services in both Fort Scott and Independence.

Hyer provides speech therapy for Mercy patients of all ages in the inpatient, outpatient and home health settings, assisting with issues such as speech and language disorders, swallowing difficulties, cognitive communication impairments, traumatic brain injuries, developmental delays, fluency, voice and learning disabilities.

A University of Kansas graduate, Hyer recently completed a Master’s Degree program in Speech-Language Pathology at KU Medical Center in Kansas City. As a student clinician, her experience included working with diverse populations, with conditions ranging from cleft palate and craniofacial anomalies to developmental delays and disabilities, speech challenges and varying degrees of dementia.

While at KU, she was accepted into the HNRS research program and completed several clinical research projects related to her field of study. She was listed on the Dean’s Honor Roll for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences throughout her college career and was a member of the KUSSHA Speech-Language-Hearing Club. She obtained her “Service Learning Certification” by completing community service in various locations. Volunteer work related to her career field included serving at an independent living facility for young adults with disabilities; helping administer hearing screenings to students of the Kickapoo Nations School; and assisting seniors with everyday tasks at the Presbyterian Village independent living facility in Fort Scott.

She also participated in the Speech-Language Pathology Honors Program and is fluent in American Sign Language.

Hyer and her husband, Coy, live on a ranch in rural Fort Scott, where she has volunteered for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program and the local Relay for Life initiative.
