What a difference a year makes. Thirteen months after a tornado damaged a new Mercy facility in Edmond that combines fitness, wellness and health services, the community is welcomed back to witness its resurgence at a public blessing and open house on Wednesday.
The 200,000 square-foot facility, located at I-35 West Frontage Road in Edmond, features Mercy Sports Performance, Mercy Fitness Center, outpatient surgery, diagnostic imaging, pharmacy, laboratory and Mercy Convenient Care. It also includes about 40 providers specializing in behavioral health, cardiology, dermatology, family medicine, gastroenterology, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics and hand surgery, pain management, pediatrics, sports medicine and surgery.
"This is the health care facility of the future," said Di Smalley, regional president of Mercy in Oklahoma, during the blessing.
The facility’s modern architecture relies heavily on natural lighting, calming waters and vibrant colors to help lift the spirits of patients and co-workers. Designers brought the outdoors in as much as possible through large windows, courtyards, natural materials and plants.
Mercy Sports Performance is the first of its kind in the region helping athletes test and improve their skills on an indoor artificial turf field using high-tech sensors that measure and record speed, athletic form and gait to offer a biomechanical performance assessment. Batting cages, power weight racks and other training tools are provided on site.
The two-level Mercy Fitness Center fills 55,000 square feet of the facility with three swimming pools, a one-and-a-half-mile indoor jogging/walking track, cardio exercise machines, free weights, massage therapy and a Kids In Motion program to promote physical fitness at a young age. Treadmills and stationary bikes feature programmable digital displays that allow users to cycle on any digital trail in the world, even through the depths of the Amazon jungle.
An outpatient surgical center will open in July.
