OKLAHOMA CITY – Mercy Hospital Oklahoma City welcomes Dr. Sara Elizabeth Suthers, a board-certified surgeon specializing in breast surgery.

Suthers has about nine years of experience as a general surgeon and now specializes in breast surgery at Mercy. She enjoys building long-lasting relationships with patients and helping them move from cancer patients to cancer survivors.

“I am excited about the chance to focus on one disease: breast cancer,” said Suthers. “Every cancer patient is different. My patients can trust that I will provide the best, most reasonable treatment options for them so they can make an informed treatment decision with their families. We work together as a team to tackle all of their concerns, including body image changes before and after surgery.”

Suthers received her bachelor’s degree in zoology from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma, and her medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She completed her surgical residency and surgical research fellowship at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Suthers joins Mercy breast surgeon Dr. Brian Robert Boggs, who has more than 25 years of general surgical experience, with six years of that dedicated to breast surgery, and Dr. Kertrisa McWhite, Oklahoma City’s only fellowship-trained surgical breast oncologist. The surgeons are supported by an entire team devoted to breast health at Mercy, including Dr. Alan Hollingsworth – a leading clinical researcher in early detection of breast cancer– who serves as medical director for Mercy Women’s Center.

Suthers is married with three young children. She is an avid sports fan, especially University of Oklahoma athletics and Oklahoma City Thunder basketball. She loves cooking, reading, crocheting and volunteering with the Friends of the Library.

Mercy is the fifth largest Catholic health care system in the U.S. and serves millions annually. Mercy includes 33 acute care hospitals, four heart hospitals, two children’s hospitals, three rehab hospitals and one orthopedic hospital, nearly 700 clinic and outpatient facilities, 40,000 co-workers and more than 2,000 Mercy Clinic physicians in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. Mercy also has outreach ministries in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
