Free Back-to-School Dental Varnishing for Kids

July 24, 2014

It’s time to start crossing things off those back-to-school checklists. Supplies, immunizations and haircuts rank high, but don’t forget about a healthy smile – it can play a big role in your student’s success this fall.

That’s why the newly-formed Mercy Smile Team is hosting a free, back-to-school dental fluoride varnishing clinic on Thursday, August 7. The public event will be held from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. in conference rooms 1-4 at Mercy Hospital Lebanon, located at 100 Hospital Drive.

“Often times, we associate dental issues with just pain and infection, but it goes well beyond that,” said Judy O’Connor-Snyder, vice president of nursing at Mercy Hospital Lebanon. “Dental issues affect speech, the ability to eat and learn, and even the way kids feel about themselves.”

Mercy Smile Team formed last spring through collaboration between Mercy and the Lebanon R-III School District. It’s designed to help kids improve their dental hygiene and provide assistance with dental care. The team has been hard at work stressing the following points about varnishing:

  • Kids at risk of tooth decay should get fluoride varnish twice a year
  • It’s safe and can be applied quickly (within five minutes)
  • Varnish adheres to the dental enamel and forms a depot from which the fluoride is released
  • It’s effective, especially if teeth are brushed regularly

No appointment is necessary; however, consent from a parent or guardian is required prior to the dental varnishing clinic. For more information, call 417-533-6072.
