As a memorial tribute to the nearly 7,000 fallen US military service members lost in fighting the War on Terrorism, the Friends of the Fort Scott National Historic Site and Mercy Hospital have partnered to host the first Symbols of Sacrifice Memorial 5K Fun Run or 1 Mile Walk on Saturday, September 13.
The race is scheduled at 9 a.m. at the Fort Scott National Historic Site.
Participants may register for one of two divisions: the 5K Fun Run at $30 per person; or the 1Mile Walk at $15 per person. Neither division is timed. All registered participants will receive a Symbols of Sacrifice logo imprinted tee shirt, a commemorative flag at the finish line and refreshments after the race. Proceeds from the event will assist the Symbols of Sacrifice committee with the purchase of a track chair for a local veteran as well as a health care project funded by the Mercy Health Foundation Fort Scott.
The race course features scenic downtown Fort Scott, the new Riverfront Park Trail, century old brick streets and historic homes. The final stretch will lead participant up Main Street where the honor roll of those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom will be read.
Online registration is available at /fort-scott-foundation-events and manual entry forms are available at Mercy Health for Life located in the lower level of Mercy Hospital or at the Fort Scott National Historic Site visitor’s center.
Pre-registration is recommended. After September 1, an additional $5 per participant is added to the registration fee. Race day registration will be available from 8-8:30 a.m. near Skubitz Plaza, adjacent to the Fort Scott National Historic Site property.
