A resident of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Dr. Katz most recently worked as chief of surgery at McCurtain Memorial Hospital in Idabel, Oklahoma, and as chief of staff at Claremore Indian Hospital in Claremore, Oklahoma.
Dr. Katz brings an extensive and varied background as a surgeon and educator. His previous professional appointments include the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon, where he served as director of trauma services and associate program director for the residency program. Also in Macon, Mercer University School of Medicine granted Dr. Katz an academic appointment as an associate professor of surgery.
Dr. Katz received his medical education at Dalhousie University/Faculty of Medicine in Halifax, Novia Scotia, Canada, and completed residencies at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and Boston University Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. He has worked as a surgeon in several communities in Canada, New York, Maine, West Virginia, Georgia, Arkansas and Oklahoma and earned the rank of Lt. Commander Naval Rank with the uniformed non-military section of the United States Public Health Service/Indian Health Service.
He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and practiced in the sub-specialty of trauma/critical care medicine for 20 years. Dr. Katz has five grown children with practices of their own: two urologists, two veterinarians and one attorney.
Dave Steinmann, president of Mercy Hospital Independence, explained Dr. Katz has contracted with Mercy to serve in a “temporary-to-permanent” capacity, providing surgery services Monday through Friday at the hospital for the immediate future, with the potential for a long-term appointment.
“We are fortunate to have recruited a surgeon with such extensive experience and knowledge as Dr. Katz,” Steinmann said. “There isn’t much he hasn’t seen in his career, and he also comes with a great sense of humor and is proving to be a good fit within our medical staff and surgery team.”
