Dr. Stuart Waite has been instrumental in working to provide needed

dental care to those who can't afford it.

Stuart D. Waite, DDS, chair of Dental Medicine at Mercy Hospital St. Louis, was honored by the Greater St. Louis Dental Society with its Gold Medal Award. Dr. Waite has practiced at Mercy for 25 years.

“The hospital environment gives ample exposure to the team approach of providing dental care for improved systemic health,” Dr. Waite said.

In addition to seeing patients with complex medical and dental needs, Dr. Waite directs a residency training program for dentists who want to be familiar with working in a hospital setting. Each year, two to three residents work with Dr. Waite and his team to reach those patients who are frequently overlooked and need special care dentistry.

“When you can approach the day with a smile, you’ve got a better outlook on the day,” Dr. Waite said. “It’s amazing how easy it is to impact somebody else and improve their life.”

Each year, Dr. Waite participates with a team of providers to outreach programs such as Mission of Mercy, Special Olympics Special Smiles and International Mission trips.

Dr. Waite attended the University Of Minnesota School Of Dentistry where he graduated with recognition for leadership and research. He then completed a residency program at the University of Alabama-Birmingham where he obtained a certificate in hospital dentistry. He has fellowship status from the Academy of Hospital Dentistry and has been an active member in Special Care Dentistry Association.
