EL RENO, Okla. (March 2, 2015) – Sheila Cowart chose a career in medicine because she always had a desire to help people in need.
“I wanted to be able to make a difference and medicine allows me to do this through the interaction and education of patients and their families,” said Cowart. “In many cases, we are the voice for those who cannot speak and I am determined that each and every patient I care for will be heard.”
Cowart joins Mercy Hospital El Reno’s emergency department team as a nurse practitioner. She hopes to provide the very best care possible for every patient she encounters.
“I like to be able to spend time with my patients to help educate them about any health problems they may have, as well as how to help them understand the importance of establishing a relationship with their primary care practitioner so they can be active participants in their health care and live healthier lives,” she said.
Cowart received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing in Oklahoma City, and received her master’s degree in nursing through the family nurse practitioner program at Maryville University of St. Louis in Missouri. Cowart spent 20 years as a paramedic/emergency medical technician in El Reno and more than 10 years as an emergency department cardiac nurse specialist in Oklahoma City.
In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, reading, spending time with friends and family, traveling with her husband and craft projects.
