Even without uttering a single word, your mouth can say a lot about your health – especially if you’re diabetic.
According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes weakens your mouth’s germ-fighting powers and can cause gum disease; in turn, gum disease can make blood sugar levels even more difficult to control.
Diabetes can lead to many other mouth problems. That’s why Mercy St. Francis Hospital has invited Matthew Mansfield, DDS, with Willow Springs Dental, to speak at the free seminar “Your Mouth: A Window to Your Health.” It’s the latest free seminar in the Setting Goals for Healthy Living diabetic education series.
“Many people don’t know they have gum disease until it’s already done a lot of damage,” said Mansfield. “If you have bleeding gums when you brush or floss, or they’re red and swollen, you may want to look further into the cause.”
The free seminar will outline the warning signs, answer frequently asked questions and demonstrate proper oral hygiene. It begins at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, in the dining room of Mercy St. Francis Hospital at 100 W. US Highway 60.
Snacks and door prizes will be provided. For a ride, call (417) 934-1575.
