ST. LOUIS - When Mercy leaders learned Andrea Karl, the true winner of the GO! St. Louis Marathon was overshadowed by a fake winner, they jumped into action to figure out how to honor her.

After coordinating with GO! St. Louis leaders, the St. Louis Cardinals, and Mercy Sports Medicine partner Jackie Joyner-Kersee, a plan was hatched.

Karl would indeed get her moment to shine with a recreation of the marathon’s finish line at home plate inside Busch Stadium before Sunday night’s game against the Cincinnati Reds.

“We know how hard Ms. Karl and everyone works to train for the marathon and to know she missed out on having a winner’s celebration was terrible,” said Donn Sorensen, president of Mercy’s eastern Missouri region. “I’m glad we were able to make it happen.”

When three-time Olympic gold medalist Joyner-Kersee learned about the situation, she was eager to participate in an event to honor the actual marathon winner.

Mercy was the presenting sponsor for the GO! St. Louis Marathon. Throughout the year, more than 40,000 athletes from the St. Louis area are supported by Mercy Sports Medicine, medical provider for Team Mercy and all GO! St. Louis athletes.
