Nancy Eckelkamp shows off donations from Michaels.
WASHINGTON - The recent donation of 530 children’s books from the Washington-area Michaels store will help brighten the day of Mercy Kids who come in for surgery. Michaels held a book drive in March, asking customers to donate a book, for $1 each, to Mercy Hospital Washington’s Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC).
The books include classics such as Treasure Island and Huckleberry Finn, as well as Disney favorites like The Lion King and 101 Dalmatians. They’ll be included in packets given to children preparing for surgery. The books and other items in the packets are meant to lessen the anxiety kids have before surgery. Nancy Eckelkamp, patient support associate with the ASC, said she was grateful to Michaels for the donation and can’t wait to begin sharing the books with children coming in for surgery.
