More than five years ago, President Barack Obama signed into law the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act - or what is commonly known as “Obamacare."
To some, this was the first opportunity to apply for health insurance. People could no longer be turned down for insurance due to pre-existing conditions, and insurance companies could no longer drop customers if they received a serious health diagnosis. More importantly, it was an opportunity to change lives.
Since Nov. 1, 2013, the beginning of the first open enrollment, more than 150,000 Missourians have purchased health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Working with the Cover Missouri Coalition, a Missouri Foundation for Health initiative, Mercy has put great efforts toward working with the uninsured or underinsured populations.
Mercy reached a number of individuals in rural Missouri counties as well as participated in community events in larger metro areas. While Mercy can account for a number of enrollments, the most important piece is not the quantity of individuals enrolled, but the quality of care provided.
Here’s just one example of the feedback:
“I would like to say how “Thankful” I am to the Mercy Coverage Assistance Program with their professionalism in helping me enroll in the Health Market Exchange. Their knowledge and expertise has really put my mind at ease!! They were really helpful. I thank them from my heart. They have truly shown their Mercy Spirit!”
Open enrollment is just around the corner: Nov. 1, 2015 through Jan. 31, 2016. During this time, anyone who does not have insurance may be enrolled for the 2016 calendar year.
