Mercy Hospital St. Louis Earns an “A” for Patient Safety

October 28, 2015

ST.  LOUIS – The report cards are in, and Mercy Hospital St. Louis has once again earned an “A” when it comes to keeping patients safe.

The Leapfrog Group has released its Fall 2015 Hospital Safety Score, which grades hospitals on errors, injuries, accidents and infections. More than 2,500 U.S. general hospitals were assigned scores, with 773 receiving an A.

“Patients come to the hospital to get well,” said Jeff Johnston, president of Mercy Hospital St. Louis.  “Our co-workers are committed to make sure that happens by caring for their illnesses or injuries while also keeping patient safety top of mind.”

Developed under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly-available hospital safety data to produce a single A, B, C, D, or F score, representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. The Hospital Safety Score is fully transparent, offering a full analysis of the data and methodology used in determining grades on the website.

“Mercy Hospital St. Louis’ A grade is a powerful reminder of its commitment to putting patient safety above all else, and we are pleased to recognize the persistent efforts of your clinicians and staff to protect your patients,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, which administers the Hospital Safety Score. “Our families, neighbors, colleagues and friends deserve a hospital that will pull out all the stops to keep them safe.”

Patients can see the scores of hospitals across the country by visiting the Hospital Safety Score website, which also includes consumer-friendly tips for patients and loved ones visiting the hospital.
