Low-risk Mercy Birthing Center Expands Care Options

January 26, 2016

ST. LOUIS - Patients interested in a home-like birth with a midwife at the Mercy Birthing Center now have more options available.

Until recently, if a mom and baby transferred to the Mother/Baby unit for an extended postpartum stay the baby’s care was transferred from the midwife to a pediatric hospitalist or private pediatrician. The Birthing Center midwifes can now provide continuous care to both mom and baby on the Mother/Baby unit, providing expanded options to best support each family and its preferences. If a family opts for a private pediatrician to provide in-house care, the Birthing Center will help arrange it.

Another change allows patients with at least one vaginal birth and one cesarean section a midwifery birth. The births will take place on the Labor and Birth unit by a certified nurse midwife with a collaborating physician present.

“We’re grateful for the opportunity to broaden options for more women seeking midwifery care,” said Elizabeth Cook, DNP, certified nurse midwife and director of Mercy Birthing Center.
