Dr. Kumaran Chinnappan is a fellowship-trained specialist in bariatric surgery. He has performed more than a thousand surgical procedures, and now he is bringing his expertise to Mercy Bariatric Center Jefferson.
An American board certified surgeon, Dr. Chinnappan is fellowship trained in advanced laparoscopy and bariatric surgery. He joins the team of surgeons at Mercy Jefferson, which recently earned its credential as a Bariatric Center of Excellence.
Dr. Chinnappan’s expertise includes weight-loss surgery, advanced laparoscopic surgery, endoscopic procedures and revision weight loss surgical procedures.
“Dr. Kumaran has been in the St. Louis area and providing coverage for surgeons on our bariatric panel at Jefferson for some time,” said Judy Skaggs, manager of the Mercy Bariatric Center Jefferson. “He has many patients who live south of the St. Louis area. He likes the community and people at Mercy Jefferson and wanted to become more involved in our program.”
He also brings something new to the program. He will evaluate patients who are potential candidates for a revision of a past bariatric surgery. He will be presenting seminars and seeing patients in Jefferson and south St. Louis counties.
“I am impressed with the Mercy Surgical Hospital and look forward to working here,” Dr. Chinnappan said. “Bariatric surgery is about allowing people to reclaim healthier lives. I am anxious to help many more people do that in the Jefferson County region.”
Dr. Chinnappan earned his medical degree from Madras Medical College in Chennai, India, in 1994. After graduation, he pursued advanced surgical training in India, U.K., Singapore and the United States. He served as a chief resident at Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center, New York, which is affiliated to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He has made presentations at national and international surgical meetings and was awarded the Outstanding Laparoendoscopic Resident Award by the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.
Dr. Chinnappan is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, London. He is a member of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and is a member of the American Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.
Dr. Kumaran is married and has two children. His interests include basketball, skiing and tennis.
