ST. LOUIS - As a way to give back, EMS students from Missouri Southern State University donated toys to Child Life services at Mercy Children’s Hospital St. Louis.

Students from the Joplin university visit St. Louis for two weekends in the spring to do their obstetrics and pediatric clinicals. The rotation started when Mercy Hospital Joplin was recovering from the tornado and the visits have continued since.

Thad Torix, clinical coordinator at MSSU, said they recently implemented a new procedure encouraging students to get to class on time - when they are late they must donate a $10 toy.

“It’s a way to turn a negative behavior like tardiness into a good outcome,” Torix said. “The class unanimously agreed to donate the toys to Mercy Children’s so they'd be available for the pediatric patients.”
