'Sunshine' Serenade Highlights Anniversary Celebration

July 15, 2016

Dennis and Loretta Heberlie were married on June 30, 1956, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Zell. They were planning a 60th anniversary party, but Dennis’ stroke changed the plans.

Instead of a big gathering at their home, Loretta came to visit him in the Acute Rehab Unit at Mercy Hospital Jefferson where his daily routine has included physical, occupational and speech therapies. He had worked all week on singing “You are my Sunshine,” so when Loretta arrived for lunch on their anniversary he serenaded her with assistance from Chris Branham, RN.

The anniversary celebration included a blessing by Deacon Dan Raidt and visits from friends, family and a room filled with Mercy nurses and therapists. The couple’s great grandson Jarek Heberlie traveled with Loretta from Ste. Genevieve.

The couple has two sons, Gerald and Mark Heberlie, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Dennis followed up by singing “On this Day, Oh Beautiful Mother.” Loretta said is it his favorite song from church and whenever they sing it at Mass, "he will be singing it all day long on Sunday."
