Road to Freedom - One-on-One Tobacco Cessation Coaching

January 24, 2017

So often when people want to quit using tobacco they have an all or nothing attitude. They think, "Why even try if I can't quit completely right off the bat?" Mercy's Road to Freedom program might be just the right option. Participants are coached by a certified tobacco treatment specialist/Well Coach who works with participants through the various phases of quit.

Ellen Fleming, RN, Mercy Cardiac Rehab nurse and certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist/Well Coach, said the phone calls help work through issues that come up regarding treatment plans. She often discusses available FDA-approved medications or appropriate short- and long-acting nicotine replacement products - sometimes a combination of both.

"I find the calls help to reinforce confidence in the process of behavior change," Fleming said. "The participants are better able to uncover the little steps of improvement when they have someone to talk through it with them. We keep the phone calls simple."
