Above the ground work has begun on the new cancer center at Mercy Hospital Jefferson, as forms are being built for the vault that will hold a new linear accelerator for radiation oncology treatments. The walls of the all-concrete vault will be up to seven feet thick.
The new main entrance to the hospital is scheduled to open for May 22 providing improve wayfinding and better access for patients and visitors. The all-private room patient tower and new cancer center are expected to open in December, and the new clinic entrance near the north medical office is scheduled to open in January.
Renovation of the existing gift shop began the week of Feb. 13 with an estimated completion date of May 22. During the three-month construction project, the gift shop is operating in a temporary location across the hall.
The May 22 reopening of the gift shop will coincide with the opening of the new main entrance near the South Medical Office. Also on that date, construction is scheduled to begin on renovation of the cafeteria dining area and the new coffee shop near the front entrance. The cafeteria renovation and coffee shop construction is scheduled to be completed in early September.
When the gift shop moves back into its renovated space, the temporary gift shop will be rebuilt as the new chapel. The chapel is scheduled for completion by August 7, along with two new public rest rooms.
The third phase of renovations for the mother baby unit on the third floor is expected to be completed on April 19. The fourth and final phase will begin immediately following and is expected to be completed by August 29.
Construction of the new, first-floor retail pharmacy will begin this month in the south medical office building near the new front entrance. The new pharmacy is scheduled to open June 20 when the connection between the new main entrance and the south conference center hallway also will reopen.
The first phase of the new Emergency Department waiting area is expected to be completed in March with a move in date of April 11. Two months later the second phase of that project will be completed with a go-live date of June 12 on the construction calendar.
Remodeling of the existing Emergency Department will take place in phases beginning in early July with an expected completion date of November 17.
Department relocations will continue as the area to be remodeled for new clinic offices is cleared for future construction. The Planning Design and Construction office is moving this week to the ground floor of the South Medical Office in the area that had been the lower level atrium before construction began.
The Mercy Clinic Psychiatry – Jefferson office that is currently in the back hallway in Suite H1341 will be moving to new space on the first floor of the South Medical Office. That move is scheduled to be complete by March 6.
The PD&C space and the behavioral health clinic offices will be remodeled as new permanent locations for Human Resources and Administration. Human Resources is scheduled to move on June 9 into the old PD&C space, which had been Physicians Services for many years. Administration will move to its new space in early July.
The new Cardiology testing and diagnostics area on the ground floor is on schedule to open on June 16.
The new cancer treatment center has a timetable of its own and remains on schedule to open in December. The preliminary site work has been completed and foundations are currently being laid.
Construction of the vault for the new linear accelerator – with concrete walls up to seven feet thick – will begin this month and the structural steel for the building will be set beginning in early March. Interior construction is expected to begin about May 22 with a targeted completion date of November 10. Exterior work like parking lot construction and landscaping at the new cancer center is planned for July and August.
